UMD Dance Team

  Prospective dancers

What to expect for tryouts:

During the first few hours, prospective dancers will learn two to three dances and the skills that they will need to audition. Dancers will learn and memorize each dance which will be taught by the captains of the team. Dancers should wear tights dance apparel with proper footwear. Proper footwear includes jazz shoes, foot thongs, and tennis shoes. Dancers should have their hair pulled securely back and should not wear jewelry.

Dancers will try out in groups of two or three in front of a panel of judges and the captains by performing the dances they learned and by executing specific skills. Dancers will be judged on their technical abilities as well as their performance abilities. It is imperative to have learned the dances so that they can be performed without the aid of the captains. Dancers should wear tight dance apparel this day, preferably a leotard and tights. NO DANCE PANTS, CUTOFFS, OR T-SHIRTS. Dancer's hair should be pulled back in a bun and no jewelry should be worn. It will be required that dancers remain at auditions until everyone has auditioned so that judges and captains can have call backs, if needed.

*Video auditions accepted during spring tryouts only!!

For your tryout video we would like you to perform one short jazz
routine and one short pom OR hip hop routine. Make sure both routines
are at least 30 seconds and highlight the style of each dance. While
our focus is usually on our jazz technique, we do perform pom and hip
hop dances as well. In addition to the routines we would like you to
perform each of the following skills:

triple turn
fouette turn combination of your choice
russian or toe touch
split leap
second position leap
switch leap
turning calypso leaps or attitude leap
any flexibility move or trick you have

You can do the skills separate or in the routines. Let me know if you
have any questions about any skills or anything else!
